Be Safe When Shopping Locally

February 3, 2010
By Edwin Johnson

After reading a news story on 10news.com today, I thought it would be a good time to share the story as a reminder for people to be aware of their surroundings when they are out and about.  Not only is this a good idea when shopping locally at a mall or other store, but it's good common sense to use anytime/anywhere.

An unsuspecting woman was simply walking to her car in the Wal-mart parking lot at Grossmont Center in La Mesa, and was attacked by some paroled criminals who are accused by police of stealing her purse and cutting her hand with a knife in the process - allegedly.

As bad as it is to be cut deeply with a knife, luckily there was nothing worse reported in this incident. Also, one of the dirt bags identified has been arrested, but the police are still looking for the other one at this time.

While I'm not trying to scare anyone, I want to encourage people to be vigilant and keep an eye on your surroundings. There have always been and always will be idiot criminals that would rather harm someone just to benefit financially than to earn an honest living.

We teach our kids about the "buddy system" so they can look out for each other.  This good advice should apply to grown-ups too!  While it should be common-sense, we all get busy and sometimes common-sense gets left behind.  So be safe and go shopping with someone else, and enjoy the company!  Another alternative is to shop online from the convenience, comfort and safety of your own home.

If you choose to shop mostly online like I do, you can go directly to a site like Walmart.com, or you may be interested in knowing about MyShoppingTown.com, which is our fundraising website based in San Diego (Lakeside). It's an online shopping mall with over 1000 merchants to choose from.  The best part?  We help fundraise for San Diego non-profit groups as well as others across the country.  You too can help these groups just by shopping for yourself, all without spending any extra money!

No matter where you shop or go during your day, be safe and be aware!
